Grey Energy

Grey energy is the energy invested for the manufacture and distribution of a product, but also to extract the raw materials and to dispose of or recycle the product at end-of-life. To provide a benchmark, the materials used for an average conventionally built home require between 700 000 and one million kWh. This grey energy represents somewhere between 50 to 100 years of heating and hot water use.
